By reading the scriptures I am so renewed that all nature seems renewed around me and with me. The sky seems to be a pure, a cooler blue, the trees a deeper green. The whole world is charged with the glory of God and I feel fire and music under my feet.Thomas Merton
Hello and welcome to week 1 of this new bible study series 52 weeks with God | Understanding His word. I created this series because when I first discovered my faith I found it tremendously difficult to begin reading the bible. I had no idea where to start, which scripture to read, or how to study His word. I persevered and now I have my bible time down to a comfortable little routine that I follow each morning.
This week we are going to begin with Psalms, and then work our way through Genesis (the first book of the old testament) and Matthew (the first book of the new testament). As you read each day it can be helpful to take notes and look for areas of similarity between the passages. Begin by asking yourself two questions;
- What is God trying to tell me?
- How could this be applied to my life?
When I first began exploring my faith I also found it was helpful to jot down any conflicting questions I had (for example “How was the world repopulated after the flood if Noah only took 2 of each animal?”) . I would then go and do additional research or ask my pastor – I am yet to think of a conflicting question that the bible has been unable to answer.
If you have a conflicting question about this weeks readings please feel free to contribute to the comments section below. I find it is always helpful to work through questions as a group rather than alone.
Additionally if you’d like to know more about my personal bible study routine, or would like to see how I set out my bible study notes let me know – I am always happy to share.
